Is the Past Really Better?
Despite undeniable progress, many Americans believe we’re living through the worst time in history. This pessimism often stems from “nostalgic bias” – viewing the past more favorably than it deserves. When we idealize history, the present inevitably seems worse by comparison. However, significant improvements have occurred, such as the eradication of diseases like smallpox. Our awareness of current issues could be a positive sign, as progress is driven by identifying and solving problems. Recognizing this bias towards pessimism can lead to a more optimistic outlook, helping us appreciate progress while working towards a better future.
